X-Rays Q & A

What are X-rays?

X-rays are quick and painless diagnostic tests that generate images of your internal body parts. During the test, electromagnetic waves, also referred to as X-ray beams, are sent into your body to create the image.

Your body absorbs the X-ray beam in varying amounts based on the density of the body part being evaluated. Dense body parts, such as your bones, absorb more of the X-ray beams than less dense body parts, such as your lungs. When you look at your X-ray image, your bones show up as white images, while your lungs are black. Fatty tissue appears as varying shades of gray.

Why would I need an X-ray?

The team at Clinica Medica Familiar may recommend an X-ray for many reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Look for bone fractures
  • Evaluate joints for signs of arthritis
  • Diagnose an infection, such as pneumonia or a bone infection
  • Screen for lung or breast cancer
  • Assess heart health
  • Screen for osteoporosis

The team may also recommend an X-ray to find a swallowed item, such as a coin.

What happens during an X-ray?

Clinica Medica Familiar performs your X-ray at the office. What you can expect during your X-ray depends on the reason for the test and the area of your body being evaluated. You may be asked to change into an exam gown and remove any jewelry prior to the imaging.

Once you’re ready, the X-ray technician at Clinica Medica Familiar adjusts the position of your body and takes the requested images. In most cases, the X-ray only takes a few minutes and doesn’t require any downtime afterward.

The team at Clinica Medica Familiar reviews the results of your X-ray and provides additional recommendations to address the findings.

Are X-rays safe?

X-rays are a safe diagnostic test. Many people worry about X-rays because of radiation exposure. However, you’re only exposed to low amounts of radiation during the diagnostic test and the benefits of the test far outweigh the risks.

However, X-rays aren’t recommended during pregnancy. Though the risk of radiation exposure to your baby is limited, the team may recommend an ultrasound instead if you need diagnostic imaging. Clinica Medica Familiar offers in-office ultrasound testing.
